The ancient Greek word Hippophaes (pronounced "e-pof-i-es", accent on the "i"), means “bright horse”. This amazing native herb earned its moniker back in the days of Alexander the Great, from the reviving effects it had when he and his men would feed it to horses that were wounded in battle. Fast forward 2300 hundred years, and Greeks revere it for its powerful antioxidants and many health properties. It is most commonly known outside of Greece as Sea Buckthorn, Sallowthorn or Seaberry.

Herbalists believe the plant has many health properties, including positive effects on blood pressure, cholesterol, vascular diseases, immunity and a variety of skin conditions. The herbal infusion made with Sea Buckhorn leaves has a beautiful dark amber tone with an earthy, somewhat vegetal flavor - perhaps a cross between the flavor of traditional black tea (without the bitterness) and rooibos tea. Klio’s organic hippophaes comes from Evros, Northern Greece, where the Evros River meets the northern Aegean Sea.
